The Diverse Workspace

I went to the diversity event held in Howe Hall on Oct. 21.  I can honestly say that I wasn't really looking forward to it, but after having gone there, I'm glad I went.  It was interesting how much the speaker knew about what he was talking about.

After listening to him, what he said really made sense. "A diverse group may not relate to each other as well, but their overall productivity and success will be moreso than that of a one-minded group." I was a little surprised by this statement, but after thinking about it, I'm beginning to understand where he's coming from.  People who are different from one another have many different experiences and knowledge bases.  People who are similar don't really have that luxury.  A more diverse crowd can accomplish a wider variety of things than a similar crowd.  One of the examples he used was the Netflix challenge.  Overall, diverse groups ended up with better results that similar groups.

I'm one of those people that tends to have trouble relating to others, so I had some difficulty grasping onto this concept.  Given some time though, I really started to understand just how a diverse workspace can become a successful workspace.
